What is an e-cigarette?

A rechargeable battery heats a heating coil, the coil heats the liquid, and the liquid turns into vapor. It’s that simple.

Technology Explained: Conduction, Convection, Hybrid, and Heating Coils

Dry herb vaporizers heat in one of three ways, and the method affects how they perform when in use.

  • Conduction brings the herb into direct contact with a hot surface, similar to a pan. It's quick, but works best when the herb is ground to the right consistency and stirred occasionally to prevent burning. 
  • Convection forces hot air through the material rather than coming into direct contact with it, resulting in a more even extraction and, for many, a cleaner taste. 
  • Hybrid systems combine both approaches and aim for rapid heating without a harsh draft, which is why so many modern appliances use them.
  • E-cigarettes work differently. A wick inside the heating coil absorbs the liquid; the coil heats it and turns it into vapor. If it gets too hot or the wick dries out, it produces that burnt taste that every vaper is familiar with. Since the coil is a wear-and-tear part, it needs to be replaced regularly. 

That is the technical difference between vaping and vaporizing: one extracts substances from a plant, while the other vaporizes a liquid using a wick.

A session with the dry herb vaporizer follows a set routine. You grind the herb, fill the chamber or insert a capsule, set the temperature, enjoy it for a few minutes, and then empty and clean it. The flavor depends on the quality of the herb, the grind size, the temperature, and how clean the device is—so the experience improves with the care you put into it.

Many disappointing purchases are due to unrealistic expectations regarding maintenance—not necessarily to defective devices. 

Dry herb vaporizers leave residue in the chamber, screens, and mouthpiece, which affects both the draw and the flavor, but cleaning your vaporizer isn't difficult at all. 

Simply brush out the chamber after each session and use isopropyl alcohol only on removable parts that the manufacturer has approved for this purpose, such as glass mouthpieces and stainless steel screens. Electronics, seals, and coated internal parts should never come into contact with it. Dosing capsules also help keep the device clean for longer.

E-cigarettes require less scrubbing but more frequent replacement. Heating coils wear out fairly quickly—this is inherent to the component and is not a defect. Keep the tank clean so that the flavors don’t become bland, and replace the coils before they burn out. Neither device is maintenance-free. They just fail in different ways.

Safety and Materials

We had considered putting together a sort of checklist, but upon further reflection, the safety considerations for vapes and e-cigarettes aren't really the same.

With a dry herb vaporizer, it all comes down to what the vapor comes into contact with on its way to you. The air flows over the heating element, through the chamber, along the tube or stem chosen by the manufacturer, and finally out through the mouthpiece. 

Cheaper models sometimes (though by no means always) cut corners here by incorporating a piece of plastic where you wouldn’t actually want it and then repeatedly heating it to 200 °C. However, price is not a reliable indicator in this regard. What matters is whether the manufacturer uses tested, heat-resistant materials, whether the temperature control remains precise even under load, and whether the manufacturer is willing to provide clear information about the device’s construction. 

Glass, ceramic, and stainless steel are heat-resistant materials, though temperature control plays a role here as well—not so much for safety reasons as because a device that displays 180 °C but actually reaches 230 °C will literally burn your herb. With e-cigarettes, the liquid is often more of a concern than the hardware. It is a mixture produced by third parties, and the 2019 outbreak of lung injuries (EVALI) was strongly linked to illegal THC cartridges, many of which contained vitamin E acetate as a cutting agent. Regulated e-liquid from established manufacturers falls into a completely different category.

Either way: Always buy clearly labeled liquid from a manufacturer that's willing to put its name on it.

The difference between a vape and a vaporizer has practical implications if you’re thinking of buying one of these devices. Confusing the two isn’t just a slip of the tongue—it could cost you real money. 

A chamber designed for dry herbs won't hold e-liquid, and pouring liquid into it won't just harm the device—it will damage it. If you buy something based solely on the word “vape,” you can easily end up with hardware that isn't suitable for the material you actually had in mind.

They also require different things from you. A dry herb vaporizer requires ground material, filling, setting a temperature, and cleaning afterward, while an e-cigarette requires a filled pod and a new heating coil every now and then—and hardly anything else. 

Of course, neither of these is a waste of money—they’re just different purchases, and it’s much cheaper to figure out which device you really want beforehand than afterward, when it’s already on the shelf.

Common Misconceptions

  • "A herbal vaporizer requires no maintenance." 

It isn't, and making that kind of claim leads to good equipment being blamed for bad sessions. Cleaning is simply part of the process.

  • "Higher temperatures are always better." 

Not with herbs. If you set the temperature too high, the flavor will become flat, without offering any real benefit. Adjust the temperature to bring out the desired flavor.

  • "Dry herb vaporizers and THC vape cartridges fall into the same risk category." 

They do not, as the data on diluted cartridges clearly shows in the context of public health. Different product classes, different risk profiles—and even their appearance is no help, since pod systems, box mods, and dry herb pens all look completely different.
